The second workshop of the Public Anthropology network, entitled „Re/Making and Navigating Publics” (November 17–18, 2022, Berlin), was an invitation to discuss ideas and concepts, as well as the politics and the relationships of the public or ‘making public’. What do we as social and cultural anthropologists refer to when we speak of public anthropology? Where is the public sphere and how is it (co-)produced through our practice?The discussion of these questions aimed to enable us to (better) understand the production of public(s), to make active use of different publics, and to help shape them.

The workshop addressed these questions through discussion panels that reflected on the making and navigating of publics in cultural practice and museum contexts, as well as the decolonization of urban spaces. It also included presentations that reflected on ethnographic experiences of the processes of doing public anthropology.

The event was organized by Beate Binder and Magdalena Buchczyk (Institute for European Ethnology, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) as well as Hansjörg Dilger and Thomas Stodulka (Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Freie Universität Berlin).
